Stuff And Nonsense

Wouldn't it be nice if Judy and the rest of those earning over 6 figures could scrape by on a little less, so the poor little workers at the bottom of the TVNZ food chain could have a little more!
Most people given the chance would be very happy to accept $800K from anyone dumb enough to pay it, so good on Judy for seeing her chance and taking it. It will probably last only one more year, and could be seen as a 'working golden handshake'.
Has anyone asked why women from Marketing are now running almost everything in the Television Centre?
And when will the weekend papers pot the head of Human Resources - the department supposedly skilled in hiring people for all facets of Television - for not only not having a TV set, but taking pride in telling people she never watches TV? Could that be a clue to why so much bitterness in the building is generated by her department? Almost the entire HR team are snooty graduates with no useful skills other than ensuring their own survival.

Holmes is thoroughly enjoying himself on the radio this morning, slamming Ralston (and Fraser) for "panicking" over Judy Bailey. He also accuses TVNZ of "gross disloyalty" to the mother of the nation which is probably much closer to the mark. This thing has the hallmarks of a cynical exercise in expediency - - if TVNZ ultimately wants to get rid of Judy - for whatever reason - then it serves its purpose to isolate her even further within the organisation and tarnish her in the eyes of the public. Before this row broke out, her image was spotless - but now she can be removed - or allowed to walk - without the sort of PR disaster that TVNZ hates so much. A one-off payment of $800,000 may be seen as a relatively cheap way of making the "problem" go away.
I think it was a panic payment to keep their star new-reader Judy. I like the title "mother of the nation". About time we had a female role model who is so obviously feminine and very competant at her job without the need to be soooo manly, like all those dreadful early feminists. Makes Kim Hill look so tired and 80's looking.
"Mother of the Nation"? Bailey's pushing 60 so how about "Grandmother of the Network Centre"? Or should that just be "Greedy Grandmother"?`
The one small blessing to come out of this is that Judy is a pakeha. Imagine the media feeding frenzy if it was a Maori woman slurping out of the public trough?
How’s this idea for a new local drama?
“The head of a TV channel’s production department and his would-be-writer wife devise a soap opera about a fading news anchor and her desperate attempts to hold her job in the face of younger, cheaper competition. The series is widely panned, but serves it’s main purpose which is to put pressure on the channel’s other underperforming executives and take the heat off the head of production’s own inadequate performance.”
Okay. It's crap. But at least it's local crap!
What nonsense to attack Judy Bailey for waking up to the real world. Her sidekick was despatched, another mega-salary was dropped, and she is holding the ball on her own.
She is at the forefront of "Market Forces" at work, very publicly. Is she paid on an hourly basis? No. Is she paid because she can read and speak? No. Is her skill set worth 800k? No. Does she bring in the ratings? Yes. Does she draw an audience? Yes. Can they afford to lose her to the Shaw-based poachings of Prime? No. To compare her salary to anyone else is inane, and worse, smacks of the nasty puritanical streak that infects our populace. The naysaying judgemental horde that bays for blood is a loathsome feature of the NZ psyche. Get over it. Judy's salary is merely the workings of Thompson's "long plastic money trench" brought into the light.
here here, shit you all sound as pathetic as tv3 did with their story last night, disappointing that this 'industry discussion' makes you all sound like knee-jerk talkback callers...
I'm down the food chain, but I can also see things the way they are, not the way they sound, get over it.
Agreed. TVNZ management has said time and again that the company needs to abolish the star system. But when push comes to shove ... and when many of the established stars of TVNZ have either jumped or been pushed out of the building in recent times ... ratings do depend on stars, and the company doesn't have as many left as it used to.
Judy Bailey is a proven audience-puller who, quite rightly when she sees what has happened to her colleagues (remember Richard Long?) is getting as much money as she can before Marketing dumps her for being 'too old'.
So why ARE there so many people from Marketing running the company? It's not just the women, it's the men as well. Was a law brought in that you have to go through Marketing or Sales to get the top jobs at TVNZ?
If Bailey’s salary is based on the size of the audience she pulls does anyone know how the lovely Bernie does at weekends?
Do viewers tune out in droves because Queen B is absent, or does the promising Princess pull just as big an audience?
I’m not one to gossip but…
A scurrilous little rumour fairly racing around the corridors of the starship Network Centre is that the divine Ms Judy is actually being paid a lot more than $800,000 a year.
Does a million a year seem credible?
Surely not.
I’d like to tell you more, but…
My lips are sealed!
I see Judy bailey as probably the most talented competent news reader we have ever had in NZ and she is amoung a select few in the world.
I think although a lot of men like her they have trouble admitting she is the best. That there are no men or women in NZ at this point in time that quite equal her talent in her field.
Calling her the mother of the nation is complementary but at the same time negates her exceptional abilities.
One little publicised fact is that 90 percent of TVNZ's income comes from advertising so to insinuate Judy Baily is a tax payer bludger is utter rubbish.
The advertising dollars she has generated over the years have probably paid for a lot of the best programming we get on TVNZ.
Several years ago John Hawkesby was brought in to TVNZ and instantly given a salary of $700 000. Even though Judy had a proven record of success and popularity dating back years he was immediately paid double her salary.
Nothing would have been said about this had he not been unable to do the job. TVNZ had to get rid of him as he was unable to preform then came the huge scandal of his redundancy payment of 6 million dollars for someone who couldn't even do the job and had only been doing it for a very short time.
Even though these men were Judy's friends ( John Hawksby, Paul Holmes ) she must have felt angry that because she was a woman she was being paid less.
Had John Hawkesby proved competent at the job, and kept reading the news no-one would have questioned him earning double what Judy Baily was earning simply because he was a man.
